Looking Good
How to Look Your Best on Zoom
.............................................................
The Secret is Lighting
How you look on screen has more to do with lighting than anything else – including the quality of your camera. And lighting can be done well - on a tight budget.
.............................................................
The Zoom image above was created using the two-lamp setup below - composed of a key light (left) and an edge/back light (right).
.............................................................
.............................................................
The key light is pointed at my face. The side/back light is pointed at the upper corner of the room behind and to my right - bouncing light back at me.
All other light in the room is minimized (blinds closed, overhead light off) so those two lamps can work their magic. Both lamps use 480 Lumen daylight (5,000K) LED bulbs.
In his excellent YouTube video, below, Harris Heller explains why lighting is the most important aspect of your setup. He is a prolific reviewer of online presentation equipment – including top line cameras.
In the video he demonstrates 5 different lamp setups. The section on key lights begins at 3:49. The section on edge lights starts at 5:10.
Notes:
- Position your camera at eye level. Center your face. Don't cut off the top of your head! Look at the camera when you speak.
- My setup includes a large green screen against the wall behind my chair. The screen isn't needed to create the lighting effects. It just lets me hide a wall of cabinets with a virtual Zoom background.
- My webcam is a Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam. The driver app is Logi Tune.
